Digital prescriptions in India: guidance doctors should check

By Where is my Doctor (WIMD)

A digital prescription is a way to record and share a clinician’s prescription; software alone does not establish compliance. Doctors should check the applicable professional rules and, for remote consultations, the Telemedicine Practice Guidelines. This overview identifies source documents and workflow checks, not a complete legal checklist.

Distinguish digital documentation from telemedicine

Typing a prescription after an in-person visit and prescribing during a remote consultation involve different contexts. Before choosing a workflow, identify which type of consultation your clinic is providing. Do not assume that a prescription generator also provides a compliant teleconsultation service.

The 2020 Telemedicine Practice Guidelines published by NMC require the practitioner’s registration number to appear on prescriptions and relevant electronic communications. They also address patient age verification and identification of the practitioner. Consult the full guidelines for the requirements relevant to your case.

Check the status of the source

The NMC amendment dated 23 August 2023 held the 2023 professional conduct regulations in abeyance and adopted the 2002 ethics regulations. A search result containing the original 2023 text should therefore not be treated on its own as proof that those provisions are operative. Review subsequent notifications on the NMC regulations page.

This article does not list medicines permitted for remote prescribing or decide whether a particular consultation can be conducted remotely. Those decisions need the applicable guidance and the clinician’s professional assessment. Seek qualified advice for legal questions about your practice.

Questions to ask in a software demo

Use a fictional patient to check the rendered prescription: clinician identity, registration details, patient details and the recorded instructions should be readable and accurate. Ask how the clinician reviews the document before sharing it, how access is restricted and how corrections are recorded.

Ask how records can be retrieved and exported and what audit information is available. Verify any signature or sharing requirement against the rules that apply to your workflow. WIMD’s digital-prescription feature is a software capability, not a certification of a clinic’s legal compliance. A prescription is a separate ₹1 action in WIMD’s pay-per-use pricing.
